Packaging: Performance and goals
We have made significant environmental improvements to our packaging:
Mobile phones
Since 2003, reduced the average weight of packaging by 50 percent
100 percent paper-based, eliminating plastic insert trays
60 percent recycled content
Average material reduction of 18 percent per re-design
Single-piece structural design to reduce complexity which reduces the amount of waste during manufacture
High-volume pallets (from 300 to 1,620 phones per pallet)
Manuals are excluded from bulk shipments to save weight. The booklets are added locally or provided online.
Bluetooth headset packaging
Reduced volume by 53 percent (from 249 square inches to 118 square inches)
Increased items per pallet from 300 to 480
Reduced the plastic shell package by 15 percent by volume
Eliminated PVC
Enterprise Mobility battery packaging
Increased number of units per pallet from 1,200 to 7,200
New battery multi-packs contain 30 percent recycled materials, and use about 60 percent less corrugated material per 10-pack design than single battery packs
Used multi-packs to reduce printed materials by 90 percent and eliminated plastic bubble wrap from bulk shipments
Enterprise Mobility MC9000 devices
Shipped in 100 percent reusable and recyclable trays holding eight devices per box. Previously we individually wrapped and boxed products.
Reduced corrugated cardboard use by 53 million square inches per year.
Reduced the number of storing pallets by 62 percent (from 186 to 301).
Replaced paper manuals with online instructions to save weight.
