Connecting the unconnected

We donate money, equipment and expertise to support projects that help to connect the unconnected. We also help boost access to telecoms through our commercial activities.

Broadband access in Brazil
To expand access to wireless broadband communication, we are leading a cooperative effort to donate our wireless broadband technology to the city of Garanhuns in Brazil. Caetes, a nearby town, also will benefit from the initiative, which will enable Internet access for public schools, libraries, cultural centers, health clinics, public safety agencies and other public services, as well as for some 120,000 local residents. The estimated value of the equipment and installation is $250,000.

Phones for Health
A public-private partnership that brings together corporations working in close collaboration with Ministries of Health, global health organizations and other partners, Phones for Health uses the increasing mobile phone coverage in the developing world to strengthen health systems. A mobile-phone-based application allows health workers in the field to file patient reports and check medicine supplies, speeding responses to disease outbreaks and medicine shortages. The mobile phone transfers the data to a central database, where the data is mapped, analyzed and immediately available to health authorities, allowing rapid intervention for those at risk. The program currently is available in Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania with plans to expand to several more countries.

Telemedicine in Pakistan

Our WiMAX technology is bringing low-cost healthcare services to remote areas in Pakistan. There is a significant shortage of specialist doctors in Pakistan, with only one for 12,800 people. Almost 80 percent of these physicians work in cities which mean that rural areas (where three quarters of the population live) are especially underserved.

In 2008, the U.S. Department of Health sponsored a project to bring medical services to remote hospitals using WiMAX. In the first stage of the project Wateen Telecom installed the technology to connect the Holy Family Hospital in the city of Rawalpindi, with a District Hospital in Attock.

The rural hospital was equipped with internet points linked to medical devices such as portable ultrasound, stethoscopes and X-ray technology. This enabled doctors to transmit medical information to specialists in the Holy Family Hospital for diagnosis. Staff at the two hospitals could also communicate using secure email and video conferencing equipment. The WiMAX connection has allowed specialists to participate in key medical processes such as pre-operative planning and follow-up, cardiac assessment, infectious disease evaluations and radiology.

Other partners in the project include the Pakistan's Ministry of Information, IBM and technology company Medweb. We donate WiMAX equipment to support underserved communities.
