Wireless broadband
Our WiMAX technology can bring broadband to underserved communities, by providing coverage across a large rural or urban area, avoiding the need for fixed lines.
In 2007, Wateen Telecom deployed Motorola WiMAX in Pakistan. In just nine months, this provided coverage in 17 cities, delivering broadband services to nearly 1 million subscribers in a country where previously less than 100,000 broadband lines were available. This network was expanded to cover a population of 30 million across 22 cities during 2008. Motorola's WiMAX was also deployed in Bahrain, Chile, Malaysia, Uganda and Vietnam during 2007, and Brazil, Mexico and Thailand during 2008.
In 2009, our wireless broadband technology was deployed in Salinas de Guaranda, Ecuador, bringing a wireless connection to 10,000 people who previously had no access to the Internet.
Network equipment We have developed a wind- and solar-power base station, which can be used in remote areas off the electricity grid. Read a case study about how these mobile base stations boost economic growth in developing countries.
