ANDY AFTELAK
Director, Operations and Strategy
As director of Operations and Strategy for the Motorola Applied Research Center, Andy Aftelak is responsible for setting the research agenda for the organization and ensuring alignment with Motorola’s business strategy. Always looking for ways to combine the invention from the Center with the innovation in Motorola’s business units, he directs this team of researchers in their ongoing search to identify new products and services that will change the way people enjoy multimedia, help public safety professionals in an uncertain world and ensure enterprise customers are more effective and profitable in their businesses.
Aftelak is the architect of the Center’s strategy, which revolves around channeling Motorola’s world-class research into four initiatives designed to make sustained impact on Motorola’s products.
Aftelak is responsible for the overall growth and management of the Center and its staff as well as its business partnerships and the applications and services patent portfolio. Translating his in-depth knowledge and experience in telecommunications, particularly wireless, he also serves as chief of staff to the vice president of the Motorola Applied Research Center, Fred Kitson.
Prior to this role, Aftelak served as director of Operations and Business Partnerships for the Applications Research Center within Motorola Labs. There, he identified and developed strategies around the technologies that would present both short- and long-term business opportunities for Motorola, including programs on transforming the TV experience, seamless content consumption and device-to-device social networking.
Aftelak started his 15-year career with Motorola as a research engineer and director of U.K. research for Motorola Labs at Basingstoke. He is valued for his technical knowledge of modern communications systems, human factors processes and user-centric research, knowledge technologies, software development tools and processes, speech coding and recognition and communication networks.
Aftelak received his Doctorate and Bachelor's degrees in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from Loughborough University in England. A fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology a U.K. equivalent of the IEEE he holds 18 patents and has been an active participant in international standards bodies and industry forums, including the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Wireless World Research Forum and Wireless World Initiative. He also has served as a member of the technical program committee for the Mobile HCI Conference and the IEEE International Symposium on Personal, Indoor and Mobile Radio Communications Conference, and is a member of the board of advisors for Camitri technologies, a U.K. organization that helps universities commercialize their technology.
