RICK KANE
Senior Director, Software, Middleware and Services


Rick Kane is a Fellow of the Technical Staff and senior director of Software, Middleware and Services Infrastructure Research the Motorola Applied Research Center. In this role, he sets the research agenda for software related research efforts, coordinates projects to ensure they take advantage of the latest technologies and manages a team of researchers.

With deep expertise in software architectures and distributed computing systems, Kane and his teams are currently investigating policy-driven component orchestration and data analytics in massively distributed computing environments. He is passionate about inserting emerging software technologies into solutions for Motorola's customers. The Initiative Kane focuses on enables service convergence across devices and allows for deep personalization in service offerings. With a keen eye for cutting-edge software technologies and architectures, Kane's thirst for constant learning and exploration in these areas make his work both stimulating and rewarding.

Currently, Kane is researching policy-driven orchestration, which is geared toward developing flexible and robust integration of legacy software, service provider software and web-based software. Additionally, Kane's research in the area of data analytics explores the collection and processing of massive amounts of data using cutting-edge software technologies.

Prior to his current position, Kane led architectural initiatives across Motorola business units and guided the research strategy and portfolio mix for the Applications Research Center at Motorola Labs. Kane has been active in driving seamless mobility technical architecture and coordination of research projects addressing the general area of content management.

Kane has also served as chief architect of the Internet Software and Content Group (ISCG), director of Strategic Marketing for the Advanced Systems Division, and director of Engineering and Operations for the EMBARC (EMail Broadcast to A Roaming Computer) service operated as a subsidiary of Motorola's Paging business. In each of these roles, Kane was responsible for broad system definitions as well as strategic analysis and system implementation.

Prior to joining Motorola, Kane held a number of research and development positions at Bell Labs where he managed R&D on networking products, protocols and distributed operating systems for the StarLAN (twisted pair Ethernet) networking products of AT&T. He was responsible for architecture, operating system design and project management for AT&T's line of 3B computers. He was a technical contributor in system engineering, software design and testing of Electronic Switching Systems.

As co-director of the Motorola Applied Research Center at Northwestern University, Kane is focused on selecting and driving the collaborative research projects at Northwestern which are Motorola sponsored. He is also a Senior Member of the IEEE and has five issued patents and six additional patent filings pending in such areas as wireless data services and satellite communications.

Kane earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science as well as an Master's in Electrical Engineering from Northwestern University. In addition, he holds a Bachelor's from the University of Pittsburgh.
