Return to Environmental Stress & Reliability

Are you in a situation where:

  • You're not governed by test specifications, but need to investigate some aspect of your design related to stress testing, or

  • You are eventually going to have to meet a test specification, but don't want to dedicate all of the time and money to formally test an early iteration of your design when only a subset of the information that will be generated is of interest, or

  • You need to understand how much design margin you have with regard to a particular parameter.

These are but a few of the many reasons why custom product stress testing might be a good fit for your situation.  The intent of this series is to provide an introduction to the variables associated with some of the more commonly used stress testing options.  Having an understanding of these terms and concepts will aid you in your discussions with customers, suppliers, and test providers.  It also forms a basis to optimize your testing to reduce costs and cycle times, yet still get the critical information you need.

Stress Categories

To begin the process of selecting test methods, the product's intended usage is a primary driver.  What type of environment will it be exposed to in normal operation?  What level of extremes will be involved?  Will the primary stress factors be mechanical, environmental, electrical, or something else?  It is very likely that multiple stresses will be involved, but it is generally a good idea to develop some understanding of the relative contributions of each so that your testing is prioritized correctly.

Please select from the links below.  At the end of each summary, you will be given the opportunity to return to this page.  Each section also has a printable/downloadable information template in pdf format summarizing the information needed for each stress testing option (Adobe Acrobat Reader required).
