Motorola Signs $30 Million Contract With Horizon PCS

For 3G CDMA2000 1X Wireless Network

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill., Oct. 8, 2001 – Horizon PCS, Inc., has contracted with Motorola’s Global Telecom Solutions Sector (GTSS) to upgrade and expand its current Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) system in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana and portions of New York and New Jersey to have third generation (3G) wireless network capability.

The contract, valued at approximately $30 million, is in addition to a $50 million contract signed last year with Horizon to install 3G-ready SC™4812 and SC 300 microcell base transceiver stations and controllers for its entire coverage area. Upgrade of the CDMA2000 1X network system is under way and initial 3G commercial service is scheduled for summer of 2002. The population in Horizon’s markets totals 10.2 million.

The contract with Horizon PCS, which is a Sprint PCS affiliate, is the 10th CDMA2000 1X network upgrade contract announced by Motorola since October 2000. Motorola provided Horizon’s original wireless network in Ohio in 1997.

“By upgrading our network for 3G capabilities, Horizon PCS is in position to adopt high-speed data services and applications,” said Bill McKell, president of Chillicothe, Ohio-based Horizon PCS. “As business partners for several years, we have enjoyed a positive working relationship with Motorola. Together, we can offer our customers the best of next-generation wireless technology with the quality and reliability provided by industry leaders,” said McKell.

“The upgrade of Motorola’s wireless system to 1X is intended to help Horizon PCS provide its customers with high-speed packet data service while significantly increasing the voice capacity of the system. Implementation of high-speed packet data service, which can exceed 144 kilobits per second, will enable consumers to download music and data to portable wireless devices such as phones, laptops and personal digital assistants (PDAs) directly from the Internet,” said Fred Wright, Motorola senior vice president and general manager of North America for GTSS.

Motorola is the world leader in high-speed packet data wireless networks, having commercially deployed the largest number of IS-95B packet data networks capable of data rates of 64Kbps and general packet radio service (GPRS) networks capable of data rates of 115 Kbps.
