Recycling and take-back programs: Performance and goals

In 2008, we collected more than 2,560 tonnes of electronic equipment waste for recycling, about a 1 percent increase from 2007.

This includes:

1. Takeback programs, both regulated and voluntary.
2. Internal electronics recycling efforts.
3. External electronics recycling events sponsored by Motorola. This chart does not include electronics recycled through other industry, partnership or carrier programs.

Motorola global take-back and recycling results

Our 2008 take-back rate for mobile phones sold in 2006 was an estimated 2.5 percent. While we recognize that this is a small proportion of the total we sell, we are pleased that many consumers are handing back their phones through other channels. For example, in 2008, 1,288,901 Motorola phones were handed back to the recycling organization Recellular.

In 2008, we established a formal take-back program for business-to-business products in the United States. We offer mobile phone take-back programs in 70 countries, covering more than 90 percent of our global mobile phone unit sales. In Latin America, we expanded our program to take back all batteries for consumer equipment. In 2009, we will offer take-back programs for all home and network equipment in the United States. However, we did not achieve our goal to increase the amount of electronics waste collected for recycling by 5 percent.

Incentives
We encourage people to return their mobile phones by participating in charity take-back programs. Proceeds from the reuse or recycling of phones returned through these programs are donated to charity. During 2008 we worked with charity programs in France and the United States.

For the fourth year in France, we supported the 2008 TV Téléthon event that raised funds for research into neurological diseases in children. We ran a campaign involving hundreds of events encouraging people to hand in their mobile phones. All proceeds from reuse and recycling of the phones went to the Téléthon charities. The French handed back more than 60,000 phones.

Motorola's Race to Recycle program encourages U.S. students to collect and return mobile phones. During 2008 we provided schools with posters to raise awareness about the program as well as useful tips on how to excite kids about phone recycling. We pay the schools a varying amount for each phone, depending on the model and age of each phone.

In Singapore, we participated in a 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) Day organized by the National Environmental Council. 5,000 members of the public attended the event where we promoted our local take-back scheme.

In China, we held a green event to encourage consumers to hand in their electronics equipment. The day was launched by the president of Motorola China.

In the U.S. we collected 122 tonnes of used electronic equipment during a community recycling event at our Schaumburg, Illinois site.

Take-back from employees
We encourage our employees to recycle their mobile phones by:

• Providing recycling envelopes and collection boxes at our sites
• Advertising through our internal employee news channels
